LESA-FONDOTOCE-MERGOZZO
We leave Lesa and follow the SS 33 (signs for Verbania), pass the Feriolo roundabout and turn right at the signpost for Camping Isolino, where the cycle path along the River Toce begins.
We cycle along the Toce River cycle path, which crosses the Fondotoce Special Nature Reserve, a protected area at European level; lush trees, chirping birds and the occasional wild rabbit will keep us company.
We walk along a short stretch of asphalt road of the provincial road to Mergozzo and then return to the path (following the signs for Mergozzo), pass the sports ground and continue to the end of the path. From here we follow the road signs to reach the village lakeside and enjoy the view.
We continue along the village lakeside and take the blue path, which will take us around the entire perimeter of Lake Mergozzo. After a short stretch of asphalt road, we return to the path and pass the campsites, heading towards Fondotoce. Once we reach the roundabout, we follow the signs for Baveno/Stresa, retracing the path taken on the outward journey in the opposite direction.
The entire route is marked by magenta-coloured arrows.
Curiosity: the Fondotoce Nature Reserve is the largest wetland and reed bed on Lake Maggiore, and is inhabited by various animal species including reptiles, amphibians, foxes, badgers, stone martens and weasels, as well as numerous species of fish.
